2019: Time for a new cable modem, but why Comcast/Xfinity?

Not sure when exactly we bought our old cable modem but it’s for sale on eBay now.

Why? Worked fine but upload speeds were miserable at about 1.5 MBPS.

Chats with Comcast/Xfinity support said I needed to contact Zoom support. Maybe there was a firmware update needed? That’s interesting because Zoom’s support site says Comcast/Xfinity manages these updates :)

So the ladies at the Comcast/Xfinity store down the street were very efficient. I will say that Comcast/Xfinity has upped their game in many areas of support over the past decade but I was sent away with their rental combo modem/router for $13 a month.

I’ve been down this street before, don’t buy one of these off eBay, Comcast/Xfinity may claim you then own it and you’ll have to hire a lawyer almost to get it out of your name.

So on to Amazon where I found this reasonably priced modem for the same price of ~3 months renting Comcast/Xfinity’s.

And knock on wood literally as I’m typing this article, it’s working great still with the Asus router we had before this adventure started.

So Comcast/Xfinity, I’ll ask again, why exactly did we need a new modem?
